The SUNY Oneonta baseball team fell 8-3 against No.6 Cortland in the first game of their weekend conference series at Wallace Field in Cortland. The Red Dragons drop to 2-4 in the SUNYAC and Cortland improves to 5-2.
Oneonta sent out sophomore
Takoda Sitar (Somers/Somers) to take on Cortland. Sitar went 4.1 innings, allowing six earned runs and giving up 10 hits. He also struck out four batters.
The first runs of the game came in the bottom of the first inning when Cortland's Tyler Phillips hit a two-run home run to left field. Â The next run came in the bottom of the second inning when Cortland's Justin Teague singled to short stop to score Colin BeVard to give Cortland a 3-0 advantage.
Oneonta got on the board in the top of the fourth inning when junior
Brandon Torres (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) led off the inning with a double to left field.
Mickey Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) successfully moved Torres over to third base with a sacrifice bunt. With one out, senior
Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) fouled out to deep left field allowing Torres to tag up and cut the Cortland lead to 3-1.
With a 6-1 Cortland lead Torres pushed across the next Oneonta run with a long ball to left field to bring the score to 6-2. Torres finished the day going 2-4 while scoring all three runs.
Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) had two runs batted in for Oneonta.
Oneonta looks to bounce back tomorrow with the final two games of the doubleheader starting at noon.
