Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women’s tennis drops last match of year to undefeated Wilkes

Wilkes Barre, PA – The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team wrapped up their spring season and 2016/17 campaign with a 9-0 loss to undefeated Wilkes University moving them to a 20-0 mark for the year.  The Red Dragons finished a successful 2016/17 year with a 13-7 overall record and .650 winning percentage.  Today however, the Red Dragon women ran into a juggernaut and could not crack the high powered arsenal of Wilkes.

Doubles play was very competitive as the number one team of sophomore Alyssa Brault (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) and freshman Jacqueline Guidice played their opponents very close even going up a break in the set which quickly vanished and the pair were broken again and lost the match 8-6.  The number two team of sophomore Faith Haedrich (Islip/Islip) and senior Alana Green (Pittsford/Pittsford) who was playing her final career dual match suffered the same 8-6 setback.  Green and Haedrich also were up a break in the match but could not hold it and their fate was eventually sealed by a superior Wilkes pair.

Singles began with the Red Dragons down 3-0 and Oneonta then lost all the singles courts. The highlight of the day was at the number three flight as Brault got her first set into a tiebreaker but lost the set decider 8-6.  The second set was also close but Brault eventually succumbed 6-4 in a singles match that took almost three hours to complete.  Also playing in her last career match was senior Kayla Houle (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) who unfortunately was setback by a much superior opponent today.  However, Houle who lost two years because of an injury came back this year and earned a 12-5 overall record in singles and was 9-9 in doubles play for the 2016/17 campaign.

Competition however does not end for the Red Dragons and they now get a month off to complete the semester as students.  The team will then reconvene on Friday, June 2nd at Newark Airport and get on a plane to Portugal for a series of exhibitions against some of the top local talent.
