SUNY Oneonta baseball splits with Plattsburgh on day two losing the first game 4-2, and winning the game two 7-3. The Red Dragons record after the day is now 14-15 and to 5-9 in the SUNYAC and the Cardinals are 8-19 to a 2-13 record in the SUNYAC. On the day, junior
Dalton Beatty (Atwater/Atwater) had three hits and four runs batted in.
In the first game the Red Dragons held a 1-0 lead for the first four innings before the Cardinals scored in the top of the fifth inning. The Red Dragons pieced together their first run in the bottom of the first inning. Junior
Brandon Torres (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) led off the game with a hit by pitch, and the following batter
Mickey Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) sacrifice bunted Torres to second base. Senior
Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) reached base on an infield hit, allowing Torres to advance to third base. S. Mullins was picked off and was in a run-down long enough to allow Torres to score.
The Cardinals scored their first run in the fifth inning, capitalizing on a walk by Joe Deland, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single to right field by Stephen Bryant to knot the game at 1-1. Â Â
The Cardinals scored another run in the sixth inning to take a momentary lead 2-1, before the Red Dragons tied the game at two in the bottom half of the frame. The Red Dragons scored one run on two hits. The first hit was a leadoff double by M. Mullins to center field, the next batter sacrificed himself with a bunt to move M. Mullins to third base. Beatty singled to center field to score M. Mullins for the second run of the game.
Plattsburgh scored two runs the seventh inning to go ahead and take a 4-2 lead they held to win the first game of the double header.
For the Red Dragons Nicholas Ponnesse (2-3) pitched 6.2 innings, allowing four runs off of six hits. Patrick Bryant (2-3) pitched a complete game, he allowed two earned runs off of six hits while striking out five batters.
The second game junior
James McCarty (Stony Brook/Chaminade) pitched 7.0 innings while striking out five batters and only allowing one earned run. He earned his second win, and his first conference win of the season.
In the bottom of the third inning with the score tied 2-2, with the bases load
Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) got hit by a pitch to give the Red Dragons a 3-2 lead. A single by Torres scored another run to bring the score to 4-2.
Plattsburgh scored a run in the 6
th inning off of a wild pitch to bring the game to 4-3. But the Red Dragons tacked on three runs in the eighth inning as they went on to win the game 7-3.
The Red Dragons next game is scheduled for Tuesday, at Damaschke Field at 4:00pm against Union.
