The SUNY Oneonta baseball defeats Plattsburgh 6-5 in game one of the conference series. The Red Dragons improved to 4-8 in the SUNYAC and the Cardinals fell to a 1-12 record in the SUNYAC. Junior captain
Thomas Bond (Somers/North Salem) earned his fifth victory of the season to improve to 5-2.
The Red Dragons found themselves in a 5-0 hole after allowing five runs off of one hit and two errors in the second inning. Bond found his groove for the rest of the game, pitching his third complete game. He only allowed three hits over nine innings of work and no earned runs.
Oneonta's first runs came in the third inning. Senior
Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) lead off the inning with a walk, and junior
Dalton Beatty (Atwater/Atwater) followed with a single through the left side. With two outs, junior
Donald Geloso (Staten Island/Monsignor Farrell) roped a triple to deep right field scoring both Beatty and S. Mullins to cut the Cardinal lead to three, 5-2.
The Red Dragon's tied the game in the sixth inning. The Red Dragons scored three runs off of one hit and one error. Junior
Brandon Torres (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury), reached first base aided by a fielding error by the short stop. On the second pitch of
Mickey Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) at bat Torres stole second base. M. Mullins walked to put runners on first and second. S. Mullins was beamed by a pitch to load the bases for Beatty. Beatty had one of his four hits on the day driving in both Torres and M. Mullins, and moving S. Mullins to third base. Junior
Chris Saitch (Kingston/Kingston) grounded into a fielder's choice to push the game tying run across, 5-5. Â Â
In the bottom half of the eighth inning Beatty had his last hit of the day, a triple down the right field line. Senior
Sage Cheren (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) singled with a line drive over the short stops head to score the go ahead run for Oneonta, 6-5.
Bond closed the door in the top of the ninth inning with a 1-2-3 inning to seal the victory.
The Red Dragons are back in action tomorrow at Damaschke Field starting at 1:00pm in a double header against Plattsburgh.
