SUNY Oneonta baseball dropped the first two games of the conference series to Fredonia. The Red Dragons fell 7-6 in extra innings in the first game. In the second game a late rally fell short as the Red Dragons lost by one run, 5-4.
In the first game, the Red Dragons found themselves in a 1-0 deficit after a top of third home run by Fredonia's Matt Wilhelm. Oneonta knotted the game at 1-1 when a wild pitch allowed senior
LJ Gizzarelli (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) to score the Red Dragons first run of the game.
In the fifth and seventh Oneonta tacked on two runs in each inning to give the Red Dragons a 5-1 lead. The Blue Devils answered in the 8
th inning with four runs off of four hits including a game tying 3-run home run by Alexio Medinia.
In extra innings, Liam Kelly hit a 2-run home run to put the Blue Devils up 7-5. The Red Dragons in the bottom half of the frame were able to push one run across the board off of a
Dalton Beatty (Atwater/Atwater) home run, but they would fall short 7-6.
Sophomore
Takoda Sitar (Somers/Somers) pitched 7.1 innings while only allowing two runs off of five hits. He also fanned eight batters and while only allowing two walks.
Junior
James McCarty (Stony Brook/Chaminade) started the 7-inning game for the Red Dragons. He pitched four innings while striking out seven batters.
The Blue Devils scored the first five runs of the game including the first run coming off a bat of Chris Rizzolo hitting an opposite field home run.
The Red Dragons made a push in the sixth and seventh inning bringing the score to 5-4, but the Blue Devils showed composure to hold on for the victory.
Sophomore
Nicholas Ponesse (Newburgh/Valley Central) pitched three innings of relief and did not allow a run. He struck out three batters and only allowed one hit.
The Red Dragons dropped to 8-7/ 1-3 SUNYAC and the Blue Devils improved to 10-9/ 2-6 SUNYAC. The final matchup of the series is set for Monday (4/3) at Wells College.
