Baseball shuts out Southern Vermont to take mid-week victory

SUNY Oneonta baseball takes down Southern Vermont 7-0 in six innings due to inclement weather. The Red Dragons improved to 12-14 with the victory, and the Mountaineers fall to 7-17.

The Red Dragons senior Matthew DePalmo (Endicott/Union Endicott ) pitched 4.0 innings of one hit baseball while striking out three batters and issuing no walks to earn his first win of the season (1-0). In relief sophomore Zach Zimardo pitched two innings with three strikeouts and only allowing one hit.

The Red Dragons put up a crooked number in the second inning scoring four runs off of three hits and one error. With two outs and nobody on base, senior Sage Cheren (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) got plunked by a pitch to get the first baserunner of the inning. An error on the second basemen allowed Dana Scarselletta (Auburn/Auburn) to reach base, and Cheren to advance to second base. A single to center field allowed Cheren to score and give the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead. The next batter senior LJ Gizzarelli (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) singled to right center field allowing Scarselletta to score the second run of the game. With both runners in scoring position, junior Brandon Torres (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) singled down the left field line to score both runners to open the game up 4-0.

The Red Dragons struck for two more runs in the third inning, when junior Dalton Beatty (Atwater/Atwater) hit a two-run home run to right field scoring senior Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) to give Oneonta a six run advantage
.
The last run of the shortened game came when Gizzarelli tripled to left center with two outs. The next batter, Torres doubled down the right field line to score Gizzarelli to bring the score to 7-0.

This was the Red Dragons second shutout of the year, the first shutout came against Cazenovia College (13-0) on March 9th.

The Red Dragons are back in action with conference play this weekend at Damaschke Field, where they take on the visiting Plattsburgh Cardinals in a three game series. The first game is scheduled for 9 innings with the first pitch being thrown at 3PM.
