SUNY Oneonta Baseball splits the double header today taking game two 8-1 and dropping the first game 5-2. The Red Dragons are now 11-13 and 3-8 in the SUNYAC, and the Hawks are 12-10 and 5-5 in the SUNYAC.
Sophomore
Thomas Bond (Somers/North Salem) pitched lights out for Oneonta in the second game, pitching 9.0 innings not allowing any earned runs and only three hits. Bond improved to 4-2 on the season and dropped his ERA to 3.76.
In the top of the 8
th inning with the score knotted at one, the Red Dragons offense caught fire scoring three runs off of three hits to open up the game. Sophomore
Mickey Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) opened up the inning with a leadoff home run to left field. With one out senior
Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) doubled to left field, and junior
Brandon Torres (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) walked to put runners on first and second. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, which is all
Donald Geloso (Staten Island/Monsignor Farrell) needed as he drove a ball to left field for a double to score both runs to give the Dragons a 4-1 advantage.
A one-two-three bottom of the 8
th inning allowed the hot Oneonta offense to get right back at it in the top half of the 9
th inning. The Red Dragons carried momentum from the prior inning to score another four runs off of three hits and one error. The inning started with
Dalton Beatty (Atwater/Atwater) taking one for the team and wearing a pitch to get a runner on first base. Freshman
James Ceparano (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) pinch ran for Beatty and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt, and moved to third base on a wild pitch. Senior
Sage Cheren (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) singled up the middle to score Ceparano to build the Red Dragon lead to 5-1. The next batter M. Mullins singled to left center that allowed Cheren to move to second base.
Michael Grudzinski (Islip/Islip) bunted for a base hit, to load the bases. Back to back walks scored two runs for the Red Dragons to build the Oneonta lead to 7-1. The final run of the game on a sacrifice fly by senior
Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) to score Grudzinski, 8-1.
In the first game the Red Dragons loss 5-2, S. Mullins went 2-3 with a walk and a run scored. Gelso went 1-2 with a walk and a run scored.
The Red Dragons are back in action against Utica College on Tuesday April 18
th, at 4:00pm.
