Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball splits double header with New Paltz

SUNY Oneonta Baseball splits the double header today taking game two 8-1 and dropping the first game 5-2. The Red Dragons are now 11-13 and 3-8 in the SUNYAC, and the Hawks are 12-10 and 5-5 in the SUNYAC.

Sophomore Thomas Bond (Somers/North Salem) pitched lights out for Oneonta in the second game, pitching 9.0 innings not allowing any earned runs and only three hits. Bond improved to 4-2 on the season and dropped his ERA to 3.76.

In the top of the 8th inning with the score knotted at one, the Red Dragons offense caught fire scoring three runs off of three hits to open up the game. Sophomore Mickey Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) opened up the inning with a leadoff home run to left field. With one out senior Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) doubled to left field, and junior Brandon Torres (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) walked to put runners on first and second. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, which is all Donald Geloso (Staten Island/Monsignor Farrell) needed as he drove a ball to left field for a double to score both runs to give the Dragons a 4-1 advantage.

A one-two-three bottom of the 8th inning allowed the hot Oneonta offense to get right back at it in the top half of the 9th inning. The Red Dragons carried momentum from the prior inning to score another four runs off of three hits and one error. The inning started with Dalton Beatty (Atwater/Atwater) taking one for the team and wearing a pitch to get a runner on first base. Freshman James Ceparano (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) pinch ran for Beatty and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt, and moved to third base on a wild pitch. Senior Sage Cheren (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) singled up the middle to score Ceparano to build the Red Dragon lead to 5-1. The next batter M. Mullins singled to left center that allowed Cheren to move to second base. Michael Grudzinski (Islip/Islip) bunted for a base hit, to load the bases. Back to back walks scored two runs for the Red Dragons to build the Oneonta lead to 7-1. The final run of the game on a sacrifice fly by senior Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) to score Grudzinski, 8-1.

In the first game the Red Dragons loss 5-2, S. Mullins went 2-3 with a walk and a run scored. Gelso went 1-2 with a walk and a run scored.

The Red Dragons are back in action against Utica College on Tuesday April 18th, at 4:00pm.
