Baseball upended by New Paltz in game one of conference series

SUNY Oneonta baseball falls to conference opponent SUNY New Paltz in game one of the series, 10-7. The Hawks improved to 11-9 and 4-4 in the SUNYAC, and the Red Dragons fall to 10-12 and 2-7 in the SUNYAC.

The Hawks struck first scoring four runs in the bottom of the 1st inning off of three hits and two walks. The Red Dragons answered back in the top of the second inning stringing together one run off of two hits and one error. The first run was scored by junior Chris Saitch (Kingston/Kingston) when Sage Cheren (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) singled to center field, 4-1.

The Hawks put up a three run inning in the bottom in the third inning to build New Paltz's lead to 7-1.

In the middle of the fifth inning with the Red Dragons trailing 10-3, junior RJ Lyman (Mohegan Lake/Walter Panas) came into pitch for the Red Dragons with a runner on second base. He shut the door on the inning with pop out and a ground out both to second base. Lyman went on to pitch 3.2 innings without allowing a run while striking out one batter and only allowing two hits.

The Red Dragons scored two runs in the 7th inning when the Red Dragons benefited from a walk to each Mickey Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) and Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal). A wild pitch moved both Mullins into scoring position, where a groundout to second base scored M. Mullins and an error by the short stop scored S. Mullins to bring the score to 10-5.

On the day, M. Mullins went 2-4 with a walk and a run scored. Both Cheren and Donald Geloso (Staten Island/Monsignor Farrell) each when 2-4 with a walk and a run scored.

The Red Dragons look to take two tomorrow against SUNY New Paltz in a double header starting at noon.
