Women's lacrosse battles No. 13 St. John Fisher

Red Dragons fall 16-8

The SUNY Oneonta women's lacrosse team battled mightily today against No. 13 St. John Fisher before succumbing 16-8.  The Red Dragons pulled to within 9-7 midway through the second half, but seven unanswered goals by the host lifted them to the win.

Oneonta (1-2) got on the scoreboard first today when sophomore Kelsey Cohen (Baldwin/Baldwin) scored off an assist by freshman Kelly Clarke (East Meadow/East Meadow) almost four minutes into the contest.

St. John Fisher (3-0) then ran off four straight goals to grab a 4-1 lead.  Four different players scored for the Cardinals during the run that spanned six minutes.

Junior Taylor Casey (Garden City South/Kellenberg Memorial) broke the run with her first of the game with the assist going to sophomore Cara Zanta (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville Senior).

After tacking on two more goals, senior Katie Flannery (Massapequa/Plainedge) took a feed from Cohen and buried a shot in the back of the goal.  Casey scored again at the 2:15 mark after another pair of goals by Fisher making the score 8-4, which is what it would settle at going into halftime.

The two teams exchanged goals to start the second half before back-to-back goals by Casey and junior Jaime Morris (West Nyack/Clarkstown South) pulled Oneonta to within a pair at 9-7 with 13 minutes left in the game.

Two quick goals by Fisher jump-started the seven-goal run as they pulled away in the final 10 minutes en route to the victory.  Casey led Oneonta today with her three goals.

Sophomore goalie Jaclyn Marry (Long Beach/Long Beach) made seven saves today for the Red Dragons who are scheduled to play its home opener on Tuesday versus Plymouth State on Red Dragon Field beginning at 4pm.
