The SUNY Oneonta baseball team wrapped up its Florida trip with its third consecutive sweep beating MCLA 7-5 and 8-6. The Red Dragons head back up north carrying a 6-3 record, for MCLA they fall to 0-2 on the season.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Red Dragons offense put up a crooked number in the top of the 2
nd inning. The Red Dragons scored five runs off of six hits, and leaving only one base runner stranded. The inning started with back to back singles by junior
Dalton Beatty (Atwater/Atwater) and freshman Brandon Laventure. Senior
Sage Cheren (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) sacrificed himself with a bunt to move the runners to 2
nd and 3
rd base.
Michael Grudzinski (Islip/Islip) hit a single that scored both the runners to give Oneonta a 2-0 lead.
The Red Dragons only hiccup came in the bottom of the 6
th inning when MCLA scored all five of their runs. The Trailblazers had five runs off of six hits and left one runner on base.
In the top of the 7
th inning, freshman
James Ceparano (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) hit his first collegiate home run to extend the Red Dragons lead to 7-5.
Sophomore
Robert Ottaviano (Nanuet/Albertus Magnus) got his first win of the season on the mound pitching 5.1 innings and striking out four batters. In relief, sophomore
Steven Gerringer (LaGrangeville/Arlington ) earned his first save of the season pitching 1.2 innings and only allowing one earned run.
Freshman
Joseph Canonaco (Briarcliff Manor/Briarcliff) started his first collegiate game on the mound for the second game of the doubleheader. Canonaco earn his first win by pitching 6.0 innings and striking out five batters. Sophomore Zach Zimardo came in relief in the middle of the 7
th inning and stopped the Trailblazers rally by getting a pop out to the first basemen and a game ending double play (6-4-3).
In the second game, sophomore
Mickey Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) went 2-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. M. Mullins and senior
Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) each had a stolen base for the Red Dragons. S. Mullins went 1-2 with two walks, a run scored and an RBI.
On the day Beatty was 4-8 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Red Dragons look to keep the streak going as they take on Montclair State in a doubleheader in New Jersey next Saturday the 18
