Baseball takes down Montclair State to extend win streak to 7

SUNY Oneonta baseball moved their win streak to seven as the Red Dragons beat Montclair State 6-2 at Diamond Nation in New Jersey.

The Red Dragons split up the pitching duties having Thomas Bond (Somers/North Salem), James McCarty (Stony Brook/Chaminade), Nicholas Ponesse (Newburgh/Valley Central) and Takoda Sitar (Somers/Somers) each pitch two innings, and RJ Lyman (Mohegan Lake/Walter Panas) came in for the 9th inning. The staff combined to only allow four hits while striking out seven batters. Bond earned his second straight victory of the year to improve his record on the bump to 2-1.

Junior Brandon Torres (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) went 4-4 at the plate including a leadoff triple to start the game. His leadoff triple was not wasted as he scored on an error made by the third basemen to give the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead.

In the 3rd inning Torres singled up the middle to score James Ceparano (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East), and move Michael Grudzinski (Islip/Islip) to third base. Two batters later, senior Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field to drive in Grudzinski to give the Red Dragons a 3-0 lead.

A home run by Montclair States Dom Lampasona pushed the Hawks first run across the board, 3-1. But the Red Dragons answered back in the 6th inning with a pair of runs to push the game to far out of reach.

Ceparano added a pair of hits and two runs batted in for the Red Dragons.

The Red Dragons are back in action on Monday, March 27th at Houghton College to take on the Brockport Eagles (10-5/ 3-0 SUNYAC) in their first conference games of the season.
