Game Recap: Softball |

Softball falls to Saint Benedict, but pound Juniata for 1-1 day

O'Gorman records second, four-hit game of the week vs. Juniata

The SUNY Oneonta softball team had its modest seven-game win streak snapped by the College of Saint Benedict this morning before bouncing back and pounding Juniata to finish its day 1-1.  The Red Dragons are now 8-2 overall with one final day remaining in Florida.

College of Saint Benedict 6, Oneonta 2
Despite out-hitting Saint Benedict, 11-9, the Red Dragons committed five errors that led to four unearned runs in their defeat in game 1 today.  Saint Benedict scored five of its six runs in the first two innings taking advantage of a couple of Oneonta miscues.

Oneonta scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.  In the fourth, freshman Kate Jencarelli (Roseland, NJ/West Essex ) hit a one-out triple before scoring on an RBI single off the bat of senior Jennifer Brocco (Kingston/Kingston).

In the sixth, sophomore Dana Del Genio (New Hartford/New Hartford) singled in front of Jencarelli who singled as well.  Brocco then sacrificed both of them into scoring position where freshman Brooke Corbett (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central/Delmar) then singled to drive in Del Genio.

Del Genio, Jencarelli, sophomore Lauren Sabatino (Bayville/Locust Valley) and senior Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) each recorded two hits in the game.

Oneonta 11, Juniata 4
The Red Dragons pounded four Juniata pitchers for 17 hits including four by senior Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) who continued her torrid pace in the first week of the season.  For O'Gorman, it was the second four-hit game this week as she his hitting well over .500.

Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the third inning, the bats came alive to the tune of six runs.  O'Gorman started things with a leadoff double, which was followed by a single by Brocco.  Both runners came around to score on a double by Sabatino.  Cuevas then doubled in pinch runner Jade Meehan (Halcottsville/Roxbury Central) with the third run.  Two batters later, Del Genio hit a two-run home run to bring the total to five runs in the inning.  The final run of the inning was scored by junior Robin Wentink who scored on an RBI single by Kaycee Simpson (Blossvale/Camden Central).

The Red Dragons continued its onslaught in the bottom of the fourth plating three more runs to increase its lead 9-3.  All three runs were scored with two outs on the board.  Wentink smacked a double to drive in Del Genio while junior Cori McFall (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) singled to drive in both Wentink and Jencarelli.

O'Gorman homered to left field for Oneonta's run in the fifth and McFall homered to the same place in the sixth for the final runs of the game for Oneonta.

Freshman Julia Calabro (Wantagh/St. John the Baptist), who earlier in the week picked up her first collegiate save, earned her first collegiate win in relief of starter Amanda Graziano (Riverhead/Riverhead).  Calabro three 2-2/3 innings of one-hit ball striking out three.

Oneonta will play its final two games of its trip tomorrow against Smith College and Scranton University.
