Women's basketball downed by Fredonia at home

Senior Cara Adams (Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) scored a team high 18 points including 12 in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team fell at home to visiting Fredonia 57-49.  The loss for the Red Dragons snapped its six-game win streak as they are now 13-8 overall and 10-4 in the SUNYAC.  The win for the Blue Devils pushed its overall record to 16-6 and 10-5 in conference play.
 
Today's game was settled in the fourth period as the two squads battled even through the first three periods deadlocked at 44 apiece.  Neither team shot particularly well in the final stanza, but Fredonia managed 13 points to only five for Oneonta.
 
The Blue Devils scored the final seven points of the game as Oneonta couldn't convert on its final four trips down the floor.  Fredonia converted its four free throws down the stretch including the final two by senior Alexis Cheatham.  Cheatham led all scorers today with 21 points that included 5-of-11 from long range.
 
Oneonta, who clinched a SUNYAC tournament berth with last night's win against Buffalo State, forced 25 turnovers in the game that led to 22 points.  The Red Dragons collected 19 steals, but in the end, made only 3-of-23 shots from behind the arc.
 
Fredonia jumped out early in today game running out to a 19-11 lead after the first period of play.  A pair of 8-0 runs proved to be the difference in the opening period as the Blue Devils shot 54 percent.
 
In the second period, Oneonta turned the tables outscoring Fredonia 17-9 to tie the game at 28 apiece entering intermission.  A 7-0 run and an 8-0 run in the period allowed Oneonta to get back into the game.  A pair of Alexa Amalbert (Nanuet/Nanuet) free throws gave the Red Dragons its first lead since 2-0 with 2:10 to go in the period.  Amalbert scored seven of her 11 points in the period.
 
The Red Dragons continued its momentum into the third period building its lead to six points at 42-36 with 3:17 left in the period.  An 8-0 run by Fredonia gave them the lead back until a layup by Adams knotted the score at 44 apiece headed to the final period of play.
 
Oneonta will play host to SUNY Geneseo and Brockport next Friday and Saturday as they close in on the final games of the regular season.  The Red Dragons will face Geneseo on Friday night at 7:30pm and then play Brockport Saturday afternoon at 4pm.
