Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball picks up another SUNYAC win at home

Four players score in double figures

Senior Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson) scored a game high 28 points and graduate student Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) recorded his fourth consecutive double-double (10 pts., 12 assists) in leading the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team to an 89-74 victory against Fredonia today.  The win for the Red Dragons was its third straight raising its overall record to 13-8 and 10-4 in the SUNYAC.

With Kelly's assists, he surpassed 500 for his career making him only the second player in program history to eclipse the mark.

Oneonta continued its season-long hot shooting today connecting on 9-of-18 from behind the arc, which proved to be a big difference in today's contest.  The Red Dragons shot 57 percent overall for the game while having four players score in double figures.

"It's hard to win games in this league and today we willed ourselves to a victory," stated Head Coach Cameron Conover.  "We made plays when we needed to and our young guys are getting better every day and all contributed in today's win."

The only time Oneonta trailed today was 3-2 when Kareem Brown completed an old fashioned three-point play.  On the next possession, senior Jack Kolosky (Fishkill/Our Lady of Lourdes) hit a jumper to give Oneonta the lead back.

For most of the first half, the two teams exchanged spurts, but Oneonta continued to hold its lead.

Leading 26-24 at the 5:19 mark, Oneonta ran off seven unanswered to seize the momentum.  The run was capped by a pair of free throws by freshman Harrison Deegan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley).

Fredonia (9-13/6-9 SUNYAC) made a late charge at the end of the half with seven straight points, which pulled them back to within four points at 40-36.  The Red Dragons struck back with six unanswered to push its lead back to double-digits, which is what they led by at the end of the first 20 minutes, 48-38.

The second half played like a carbon copy of the first.  Every time the Blue Devils made a run at Oneonta, they countered maintaining its lead long enough to close Fredonia out.  After a Blue Devil 8-0 burst, they trailed by only a bucket, 68-66, with 8:16 remaining.  Junior Ian Helps converted a three-point play to bring Fredonia as close as they would get for the remainder of the contest.  Helps led the Blue Devils with 18 points today.

Oneonta squelched any hopes of a Blue Devil comeback with a 21-4 run over the next six minutes.  Fueling the run was freshman Kevin Mackin (Nanuet/Nanuet) who scored 11 of his 13 second half points.  Mackin drilled three, three-pointers while adding another jumper with just under three minutes to go in the game.

Joining Coleman, Kelly and Mackin in double figures today was senior Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) who scored 20 points in the game.  McElroy was 8-of-15 from the floor including 4-of-6 from behind the arc.

Oneonta will be home again next weekend for back-to-back SUNYAC contests against SUNY Geneseo and Brockport.
