Late run pushes women's basketball past NYU

Samantha Lisikatos comes off bench to lead Oneonta with 16 points

Trailing by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter, the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team pulled out a 63-61 come-from-behind victory today on the road against NYU.  Junior Madeline Frank (Syracuse/Jamesville-Dewitt) hit a jumper to tie the game at 61 before free throws by classmate Teresa Anken (Rome/Rome Free Academy) and sophomore Leanne Corso (Commack/Commack) with under 10 seconds remaining gave Oneonta the win to remain a perfect 4-0 in the early season.
 
Oneonta began its comeback in the final 6:54 of the game trailing 54-48.  Frank made a jumper and then senior Samantha Lisikatos (Cold Spring/Haldane) made a pair of free throws to cut NYU's (3-2) lead to four points with 3:54 remaining.
 
On its next possession, the Violets buried a three to push its lead back to seven points.  Oneonta answered with a three of its own by Corso to bring the score to 57-53 with 3:16 left.  A jumper by Lisikatos pulled the Red Dragons to within a basket at the 2:09 mark.  Lisikatos led Oneonta with 16 points today off the bench.
 
NYU pushed its lead bask to four points converting baskets on its next two possessions while Oneonta scored on its trip in between NYU's two baskets making the score 61-57 with 1:49 remaining in regulation.
 
A pair of free throws by sophomore Alexa Amalbert (Nanuet/Nanuet) pulled Oneonta back to within two points.  NYU missed a layup that set up the opportunity for Frank to tie the game.
 
In the game, Oneonta outscored NYU 26-3 from the free throw line including a perfect 11-of-11 by Amalbert.  Amalbert led the Red Dragons today with 15 points followed by Frank's 14 points.
 
Oneonta led 17-16 at the end of the first quarter, but the two teams went into halftime knotted at 32 apiece.  The Violets took a three-point lead into the final quarter before the Red Dragons ended the game scoring the final six points.
 
Oneonta will put its 4-0 record on the line on Tuesday night when they travel a short distance to face city rival Hartwick College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm in the Lambros Arena.
