Women's basketball falters at Hartwick

Red Dragons suffer first setback of the season

The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team suffered its first setback of the season tonight at Hartwick in the "Battle of the Hills" game 65-59.  The Red Dragons entered the fourth quarter holding onto a 46-42 lead before being outscored in the final quarter 23-13.

Sophomore Olivia Allrich (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) scored 12 of her team high 15 points in the first half to lead Oneonta (4-1).  Junior Madeline Frank (Syracuse/Jamesville-Dewitt) recorded another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 31 minutes of action.

The two teams took turns exchanging the lead throughout the opening first quarter.  Oneonta made four of its eight threes for the game in the quarter including a pair by sophomore Alexa Amalbert (Nanuet/Nanuet).  Amalbert finished the contest with seven points.

After a three by Mary Schoenherr to start the second quarter for Hartwick (1-4), the Red Dragons countered with a 9-2 run that tied the score at 27 apiece on an Allrich jumper at the 4:27 mark.  The two squads entered halftime with the Hawks holding a slim 32-31 advantage.

Oneonta asserted itself in the third quarter outscoring the Hawks 15-10 to grab a four-point lead going into the fourth quarter.  The Red Dragons actually held a lead of eight points at two different times in the quarter.

Oneonta continued to hold the lead and had a 56-51 lead with 5:16 remaining in the game after a Leanne Corso (Commack/Commack) jumper.  At that point, the Red Dragons went cold and Hartwick heated up to the tune of 13 unanswered points that secured victory in the end.

Hartwick had four of its five starters reach double figures led by Carly Johnson's 22 points.  The Hawks biggest advantage in the game came in the paint outscoring Oneonta 30-12.

Oneonta will begin SUNYAC play this weekend when they host SUNY Geneseo and Brockport Friday and Saturday.  Friday's contest with Geneseo is scheduled for 5:30pm and Saturday's game against Brockport will begin at 1pm.
