Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Amalbert scores 18; Women complete season sweep of rival Cortland

Three players scored in double figures tonight led by freshman Alexa Amalbert (Nanuet/Nanuet), as the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team defeated its rivals from SUNY Cortland 67-57.  The win for Oneonta completed the season sweep and pushed its overall record to 8-7 and 5-3 in the SUNYAC.  The loss for Cortland dropped them to 7-9 overall and 6-3 in the conference.

The two squads came out of the first period tied at 11 apiece.  Both squads struggled from the floor with neither posting better than 26 percent.

Oneonta began to assert itself towards the end of the second period where they outscored Cortland 16-8.  The hosts scored the final five points of the period to grab a 27-19 lead at intermission.

Oneonta's run would continue at the beginning of the this period with back-to-back layups by freshman Leanne Corso (Commack/Commack).  Corso scored all seven of her points during the nine unanswered that gave Oneonta a 31-19 lead.

Another six unanswered points midway through the third period pushed Oneonta's lead to its largest at 16 points.  Amalbert made a pull up jumper and a driving layup to fuel the spurt.  Amalbert finished the contest with a season high 18 points.

A pair of three-pointers by Cassidy Chapko to end the third period brought Cortland to within 11 points entering the fourth period.  Chapko led all scorers in the game with 23 points that included five baskets from behind the arc.

The visitors made the game interesting a few minutes later with a 9-0 run that once again was fueled by Chapko, who buried two more from long distance.  A three-point play by Alyssa Crosby at 7:39 pulled Cortland to within five points at 50-45.

Back-to-back threes by Amalbert and sophomore Teresa Anken (Rome/Rome Free Academy) along with a pair of free throws by junior Samantha Lisikatos (Cold Spring/Haldane) essentially put the game out of reach for Cortland with 3:36 remaining.  Lisikatos came off the bench tonight to contribute 11 points.

Cortland made one final push, but couldn't get any closer than seven points.

Joining Amalbert and Lisikatos in double figures tonight was senior Cara Adams (Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) who scored 12 points.

Oneonta will be in action again this weekend in western New York, as they take on Buffalo State Friday night and Fredonia on Saturday afternoon.
