Alfred, NY – The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team got the new season off to a rousing start by overwhelming the Alfred University Saxons 9-0.  Freshman Jacqueline Guidice, making her Red Dragon debut teamed up with veteran senior Alana Green (Pittsford/Pittsford) at number one doubles and had little trouble dominating their opponents 8-2.  Junior Samantha Felice (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) partnered with sophomore Faith Haedrich (Islip/Islip) at the second position and played a tight match, but pulled ahead to gain the 8-4 triumph with a solid and dominate net game.  Newcomer, transfer junior Kaitlin Ferrara, teamed with partner, senior Kayla Houle (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy), who returned to the lineup after a two-year absence due to a knee injury and secured a triumph at number three doubles with an impressive 8-1 win.

Singles play was an impressive display of steady tennis from the Red Dragon women as Green only lost one game at the top spot gaining a 6-0, 6-1 win.  Guidice in her first singles match of her collegiate career struggled early with a case of nerves in the number two position but pulled out of it to gain a 7-5, 6-0 victory.  Sophomore Michelle Halpern (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) returned to her familiar number three position and secured a very routine 6-2, 6-2 triumph.  Haedrich played dominant tennis and never let her opponent into the match and double bageled her Saxon foe 6-0, 6-0.  Houle completed her celebratory day with a very businesslike win overwhelming her opponent 6-1, 6-1 in the fifth spot.  Felice was also dominant when she took home a double bagel 6-0, 6-0 conquest in the sixth flight.

The women will now get ready for the SUNY Athletic Conference pool play hosting Plattsburgh on Friday, September 9^th at 3 PM followed by a match versus SUNY New Paltz on Saturday, September 10^th at 1 PM.  Both contests will be played on the Heissan Tennis Courts on the campus of SUNY Oneonta.
