On a day where the rain would not let up, the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team battled visiting SUNY Geneseo to a 1-1 draw. The two squads played 110 minutes in a driving rain and settled nothing, as both teams remained tied in the SUNYAC standings with identical 1-1-1 records.
Â
Geneseo (3-1-4) scored the game's first goal in the 12
th minute. Senior Erin O'Connor controlled a pass from the midfield by classmate Emily Green and raced toward the goal. O'Connor was able to dribble around a charging
Emilie Mull (Marcy/Whitesboro) before sending a shot along the ground into the back of the goal.
Â
Oneonta (3-3-4) outshot Geneseo, 6-3, in the opening half despite trailing at the break. The Red Dragons did have a couple of scoring chances just sail over the goal. Sophomore
Nicole Donadio ( Port Jefferson Station /Comsewogue) had a shot from the top of the box in the 13
th minute and junior
Laura Rolston (New City/Clarkstown South) redirected a cross from classmate
Rachel Berk (Eastchester/Eastchester) that just went over the cross bar in the 33
rd minute.
Â
Mull came up with a big stop in the 59
th minute when she punched a shot by Leah Green over the goal.
Â
Three minutes later, Oneonta was awarded a free kick after a hand ball was called just outside the box on the left flank. Junior
Emily Opalinski (East Amherst /Williamsville East ) took the direct kick and sent a shot high that headed for the goal. The ball continued to sail right over the outstretched arms of the Geneseo keeper to tie the score at 1-1.
Â
The two teams went back-and-forth until the end of regulation with the score knotted at one apiece.
Â
In the 92
nd minute, both teams had scoring chances. Rolston got her head on a ball sent in toward the goal off a corner kick by
Julia Cranz (Huntington/Walt Whitman). On the ensuing break, O'Conner nearly ended the game with a shot from close that Mull handled.
Â
In the 108
th minute, the only opportunity came from Oneonta off a corner kick. After the ball was punched out, Cranz, who took the corner for Oneonta, sent another shot in that Emily Janiszewski had to catch over an Oneonta player in front.
Â
Both goalies finished the match with seven saves. Oneonta ended the game with a 13-9 advantage in shots and a 7-2 corner kick advantage.
Â
Oneonta will complete its weekend home stand with a match tomorrow against Brockport beginning at 1pm.
