Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer runs Win Streak to Five Games

Red Dragons defeat Vassar and Hamilton

Senior Dillon Johnson (Northport/Northport) headed a service from classmate Zachary Southworth (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) on a corner kick in the third minute of overtime to lift the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Hamilton today.  The win for the Red Dragons completed a weekend sweep after a 4-2 win at home yesterday against Vassar.  Oneonta has now won five straight to raise its record to 5-2 overall.

"Today was another character win against a tough and organized NESCAC team," said Head Coach Iain Byrne.  "The result was harsh on Hamilton who were unlucky to lose."

In yesterday's win against Vassar, Oneonta trailed 1-0 at halftime before exploding for four goals in the second half to take the win.

Senior Anthony Passiatore (South Setauket/Ward Melville) got things started for the Red Dragons early in the second half on a shot from outside the 18 that sailed over the keepers head.  The goal was assisted by classmate Jake Foley (Commack/Commack).

Oneonta seized control of the match with a pair of goals over the next 13 minutes to grab a 3-1 lead.

Senior Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City) was in the right place to collect a rebound of a shot by sophomore Alejandro Ruiz (Brentwood/Brentwood) in the 57th minute.  It was Purtell's team leading fourth goal of the season.

Six minutes later, freshman Witman Hernandez (Huntington/Walt Whitman) showed off some fancy foot work and dribbled around a couple of defenders before punching in his second goal of the season.

Vassar (5-1) pulled back to within one goal in the 68th minute on a one-touch goal by Alex Gonzalez.

Johnson netted an insurance goal for the Red Dragons in the 78th minute off an assist from Brandon Arango (Ronkonkoma/Sachem North).

Freshman Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) made four saves in goal for Oneonta against the Brewers.  The Red Dragons recorded 15 shots in the match including 13 on frame.

"Vassar was a real tough opponent," stated Byrne.  "Once again, Passiatore dragged us back after going a goal down.  We scored some quality goals."

Oneonta opens SUNYAC play at home this Friday with a game versus rival SUNY Cortland beginning at 3pm.
