The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team completed the weekend sweep today to capture its third consecutive Oneonta Mayor's Cup title. Today, the Red Dragons defeated Manhattanville 2-1 in what turned out to be the championship match after the Valiants defeated Rensselaer yesterday in its opener.
Â
The game-winner for Oneonta (2-2) today came off the right foot of sophomore midfielder
Alejandro Ruiz (Brentwood/Brentwood) in the 66
th minute of play.
Â
"After yesterday's impressive showing, we were excited for today's game," commented Head Coach
Iain Byrne. "Unfortunately, we were very uninspiring. Full credit to Manhattanville who outplayed us for most of the match. Ally scored a wonderful goal to seal the win."
Â
Manhattanville (3-2) had just tied the game when junior Robin Schaufele took advantage of a defensive turnover in the Oneonta box where he then blasted a shot over the head of keeper
Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) in the 61
st minute. Schaufele, who scored the game-winner for the Valiants yesterday, was selected as the Jim Lennox Offensive MVP of the tournament.
Â
Ruiz's goal was pretty, as the sophomore volleyed it to himself by two defenders before he unleashed a low riding shot from the top of the box that ended up in the left corner. The goal was his first of the season.
Â
Despite out shooting the Valiants in the opening half of play, 9-2, the Red Dragons were only able to muster up one goal. It came in the 27
th minute on what seemed to be a harmless header towards the goal by junior
Kevin Hoff (LaGrange/Arlington). As the ball was heading towards the goal it changed direction off the foot of a Manhattanville defender a trickled by the keeper into the goal.
Â
Oneonta finished the match with a 19-5 shot advantage and a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
Freshman keeper
Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) made three stops in picking up his second straight win in goal for the Red Dragons.
Â
All-Tournament selection, freshman Tim Carsting, made five saves in goal for the Valiants. Carsting was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Christopher Staahl and Michael Jean-Charles.
Â
Oneonta senior
Anthony Passiatore (South Setauket/Ward Melville) was selected as the Garth Stam Defensive MVP to lead the list of Red Dragon honorees. All-Tournament selections included senior
Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City), junior
Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) and freshmen
Justin Cebollero (Commack/Commack) and
Witman Hernandez (Huntington/Walt Whitman).
Â
Oneonta will have a quick turnaround, as they get back into action this Tuesday at home versus Rensselaer. Kickoff is scheduled for 4pm on Red Dragon Field.
