Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's lacrosse falls to Oswego in overtime thriller

Comeback falls short for Red Dragons in third overtime

The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team battled from behind all afternoon before dropping a heartbreaking, 9-8, contest to visiting Oswego today in three overtimes.  Senior James Lennon ended the game at the 3:11 mark of the third overtime when he pushed towards the goal while dodging a defender before putting a shot by Oneonta goalie Ryan Adler (Smithtown/Smithtown West) with the game-winner.

Oneonta (4-6/0-2 SUNYAC) forced the extra time in thrilling fashion when they scored with four seconds remaining in regulation.  Oswego (4-6/1-1 SUNYAC) goalie Wyatt Russo had just made a save with 19 seconds to go and made a long clearing pass that ended up in the crosse of Coz Fiore (Webster/Webster Thomas), who then made a long pass back into the attacking third.  The pass was collected by senior Connor Coyle (Centerport/Harborfields), who then turned and fired a shot that beat Russo to tie the game at 8-8.

Oneonta was trailing by a pair of goals before sophomore Nathan Doody (Tully/Tully) scored at the 6:25 mark to pull the Red Dragons to within a single goal.

Senior Taylor Kalbacher (Syosset/Syosset)'s second goal of the game at 12:35 of the fourth period tied the game at 6-6.

Oswego pulled back ahead on goals by Ryan Jelen and freshman Bobby Emerson, which gave the Lakers an 8-6 lead with 9:36 to go in the contest.

The Red Dragons outshot the Lakers 6-3 in the extra periods, but Russo came up with four saves.  Oneonta finished the contest with a 42-27 shot advantage overall and Russo came up with 15 stops.

Junior Zach Anderson scored the only goal of the first quarter giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.

Oswego took a 2-0 lead in the first minute of the second period on a goal by freshman Jarrod Wilkom before Coyle got Oneonta on the scoreboard.

Back-to-back goals by Ryan Jelen and Lennon pushed Oswego's lead to 4-1, but a goal by Kalbacher at the 4:01 mark got the Red Dragons back to within a pair of goals heading into halftime.

The Lakers created some breathing room with a pair of goals to take a 6-2 lead with 5:25 remaining in the third quarter before Oneonta seized the momentum.

The sophomore tandem of Doody and Alec Solomito (Holtsville/Sachem East) combined to rip off three straight goals for Oneonta over the final 3:35 of the period.  Solomito fed Doody three times before he rifled three shots that found the back of the goal.  Oneonta headed to the fourth period down 6-5.

Jelen collected four points today to lead the Oswego attack while Lennon finished with three goals.

Oneonta will have the week off before hosting Brockport for a SUNYAC game next Saturday, Apr. 16 beginning at 3:30pm.
