Baseball drops opening game of Oswego series in extra innings

The SUNY Oneonta baseball fell today to No. 10 Oswego in the 11th inning when John Barnes hit a two-run, inside the park home run to put the Lakers up 5-3.

The Red Dragons offense erupted for 13 hits against the Lakers. Eight of the nine starting hitters reached base safely with junior Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) leading the team going 3-4 with an RBI and run scored.

In the 4th inning, sophomore Brandon Torres (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) singled between the shortstop and third baseman. Mullins would square around to bunt, and the first baseman committed a throwing error for Mullins to reach safely while Torres advanced to third base. An RBI groundout to the second baseman pushed Torres across to break a 0-0 tie. The Red Dragons added one more run in the inning, as Michael Grudzinski (Islip/Islip) doubled down the left field line to score Mullins for a 2-0 Red Dragon lead.

Sophomore captain Thomas Bond (Somers/North Salem) pitched 6.1 innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out three in the no decision. This was Bonds fourth consecutive quality start for the Red Dragons. Erik Johansen (Rosendale/Rondout) came in relief for Bond and went 4.2 innings allowing only the one hit in the 11th.

The Red Dragons will finish the series tomorrow at noon with a doubleheader at Damaschke Field.
