The SUNY Oneonta baseball team had its offense in full swing against Utica today, producing 13 runs off of 13 hits, as they scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk off with a 13-12 victory. Sophomore
RJ Lyman (Mohegan Lake/Walter Panas) collected his first collegiate victory to improve to 1-0 on the season.
The Red Dragons found themselves in an early hole, as the Pioneers came out in the top of the first inning putting up two runs. Oneonta (6-22) answered back in the home half of the first courtesy of senior
Joe Franke (Livingston Manor/Liberty Central) who doubled down the right field line to score
Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem) and Donald Gelso to tie the game 2-2. Later in the same inning, senior
Dylan Stamile (Long Beach, NY/Bowie (Austin, TX)) scored on a wild pitch, and junior Matt Thompson drove a ball down the left field line to score Franke to give the Red Dragons a 4-2 advantage.
The Pioneers scored two runs in the second inning and the top of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead.
In the bottom frame of the 4
th inning, the Red Dragons rallied to take the lead back from the Pioneers 8-4.
Jack Burns (Endicott/Union Endicott ) had an RBI single that would score
Sage Cheren (Bronx, NY/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy).
Sam Beaulac (Wynantskill/Averill Park ) had a two RBI single to left field to score
Ryan Fay (Carmel/Carmel High School) and Thompson. For the last run of the inning, Stamile drove a ball to deep center field for a sacrifice fly to score Burns.
The Red Dragons found themselves in a hole in the bottom of the 9
th inning, because in the top of 8
th, Utica put up five runs to take a 12-9 lead.
The Red Dragons refused to surrender and strung together four hits in the bottom of the frame to score four runs to win the game in walk off fashion. The walk off hit came off the bat of Gelseo, who hit a bases loaded ground ball to the second baseman, which he could not handle, pushing across the 13
th run. Â
The Red Dragons are back in action against SUNY Plattsburgh in Plattsburgh this weekend for three conference games.
