The SUNY Oneonta baseball team dropped the final game of its weekend series against New Paltz today at Damaschke Field 6-4. Brian LoRusso earned his third win this season and Andrew DiNardo would collect his third save of the season for New Paltz.
The Hawks came out and put up two runs (one earned) in the 1
st inning off of sophomore
James McCarty (Stony Brook/Chaminade). The Red Dragons answered back in the bottom of the second inning when senior
Dylan Stamile (Long Beach, NY/Bowie (Austin, TX)) singled up the middle to lead off the inning. Sophomore
Brandon Torres (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) would reach on a throwing error by the pitcher after squaring around to bunt, Stamile advanced to third on the play while Torres found himself on second. Junior
Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) then grounded out to second base, scoring Stamile and moving Torres over to third base. Junior
Michael Grudzinski (Islip/Islip) singled to left field to score Torres to tie the game 2-2.
In the top of the 3
rd inning New Paltz regained the lead again scoring one run off of two hits to make the score 3-2. Â
The Red Dragons tied the game in the bottom of the 4
th inning when Grudzinski and
LJ Gizzarelli (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) both walked with one out. The next batter, sophomore
Sam Beaulac (Wynantskill/Averill Park ), doubled to right center field, scoring Grudzinski to tie the game at 3-3.
The Hawks added two runs in the seventh and one in the ninth to go ahead 6-3 entering Oneonta's last at-bat.
The Red Dragons started a rally in the ninth with the first three batters hitting singles, the final one by Stamile that knocked in
Donald Geloso (Staten Island/Monsignor Farrell) from second base. Oneonta then executed a double steal that moved
Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem) to third and Stamile to second with no outs.
New Paltz would use crafty pitching, switching the left fielder, third basemen and pitcher to play the lefty-lefty or righty-righty match up to retire the last three batters.
The Red Dragons are back in action tomorrow as they take on SUNY Cortland at 3:30pm at Damaschke Field.
