Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women’s tennis gains second win in a row shutting out College of Staten Island 9-0

Staten Island, NY – For the second week in a row the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons women's tennis squad gained a victory over a CUNY Athletic Conference opponent this time shutting out the College of Staten Island Dolphins 9-0.  The win today made it two in a row for the Red Dragon women.

The Red Dragons got off to a great start and took the doubles stanza 3-0.  The first doubles team of senior Michelle Spencer (Homer/Homer) and junior Alana Green (Pittsford/Pittsford) played another fundamentally sound game communicating throughout the match and walked away with an 8-1 victory.  Senior Samantha Butcher (Sidney/Sidney Central) and junior Christine Santarsiero (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) were locked in a tight dual and pulled away for a 7-4 lead.  However, the Dolphins made it close by winning the next two games, but the Red Dragon pair won the final game of the match breaking serve pulling out a victory by the score of 8-6.  Freshman Faith Haedrich (Islip/Islip) and sophomore Samantha Felice (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) won their third match in a row this time in dominant fashion gaining an 8-0 victory.

Singles play began with the Red Dragons holding a 3-0 advantage and never let their opponents back into the competition.  Green played her typical mentally tough tennis and although her opponent kept things close, all the big points went Green's way as she triumphed 6-4, 6-3.  At second singles, Spencer played inspiring tennis today refusing to lose points and running everything down, completely frustrating her opponent, and earned her second win in a row 6-1, 6-3.  Freshman Michelle Halpern (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) is gaining valuable experience and she too was just overly consistent and her opponent could provide no answers and Halpern was victorious 6-1, 6-1.  Senior Samantha Butcher (Sidney/Sidney Central) playing in the fourth spot lost the very first game of the match and then rattled off the next 12 games cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 conquest.  Santarsiero also was never threatened and was dominant in her win at number five singles taking the match 6-1, 6-1.  Freshman Gabriella Dybas (Amsterdam /Amsterdam) has been very impressive since earning the sixth position and today was no exception as she was consistent and glided her way to a 6-0, 6-1 success.

The victory today for the Red Dragon women's tennis team was their third of the spring season tripling the amount of wins they had all last spring.  The road ahead does not get easy though and the women will head to Schenectady, NY to take on Union College on Thursday, April 21st beginning at 4 PM.
