Game Recap: Softball |

Softball swept by Plattsburgh in SUNYAC opening doubleheader

After waiting to play for two weeks, the SUNY Oneonta softball team renewed its season at Plattsburgh.  Unfortunately for the Red Dragons the rust showed, as they were swept by the Cardinals to open its SUNYAC schedule.  Oneonta (8-9/0-2 SUNYAC) dropped the first game 6-3 and lost the second game 12-4.

In game one, Oneonta jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Senior Jamie Whittam (Saugerties/Saugerties) led off the game with a walk and went to second on a ground out to shortstop.  She came around to score on a single up the middle by junior Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham).

Cuevas advanced to second on a wild pitch and then went to third on a single by classmate Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa).  O'Gorman then stole second to put two runners in scoring position with two outs.  Sophomore Cori McFall (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) then singled up the middle to drive in Cuevas.  On the play, O'Gorman was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

Plattsburgh (11-8/3-1 SUNYAC) took advantage of a fielding error to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Another error in the fifth inning prolonged the at-bat for the Cardinals, as they scored three runs to grab a 5-2 lead.  They added their final run in the sixth on an infield single.

Oneonta tried to rally in the seventh when Cuevas scored on an RBI single from Jennifer Brocco (Kingston/Kingston), but that's the last run scored for the Red Dragons.

Plattsburgh raced out to a 5-1 lead after two innings in the second game.  Oneonta's run came in the second inning when freshman Lauren Sabatino (Bayville/Locust Valley) scored on an error by the centerfielder on a single by classmate Dana DelGenio (New Hartford/New Hartford),  Sabatino hit a two-out double to get into scoring position.

A bases-clearing double in the bottom of the fourth inning gave the Cardinals an 8-1 lead.

Oneonta got the three runs back in the fifth inning on back-to-back doubles.  O'Gorman hit the first one that drove in both Whittam and freshman Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke), who started the inning with back-to-back singles.  Brocco followed O'Gorman's double with one of her own to score her from second.

Plattsburgh ended the game in the sixth inning with four runs.  After an error gave the Cardinals an extra out, they scored the game-ending run on a wild pitch.

Oneonta was scheduled to play at Potsdam tomorrow, but they have been postponed once again.  The next scheduled doubleheader is Tuesday at Ithaca College.
