Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's lacrosse drops tough one at Washington College in overtime

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team suffered a setback last night at Washington College in overtime 7-6.  The Red Dragons held a 6-4 lead late in the game before the Shoremen tied the game with 16 seconds remaining before winning the contest with 11 seconds to go in the first overtime.

Sophomore attackman Tyler Powers scored the game-winning goal with 11 seconds left in the extra session after senior midfielder Andrew Docktor forced the overtime with a goal from midfield late in the fourth quarter.

Oneonta (1-1) got on the board first with 8:29 remaining in the first quarter as sophomore Alec Solomito (Holtsville/Sachem East) scored off an assist from senior Connor Coyle (Centerport/Harborfields).  Matty Allen evened things up for the Shoremen 1:44 later with an unassisted tally before scoring again with 56 seconds to go in the opening quarter to put the Shoremen ahead, 2-1 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, the Red Dragons knotted the score at two goals apiece when Robert Neubert (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachem East) fired in a transition goal off an assist from Coyle at the 11:12 mark.  Another transition goal, this one scored by sophomore Nick Schuman (Webster/Webster Thomas) off an assist from Coz Fiore (Webster/Webster Thomas), put Oneonta ahead, 3-2, with 7:29 to play before halftime. John Shea (Huntington/Huntington) made it 4-2 with an unassisted goal for the Red Dragons with 5:35 on the clock before Solomito tallied an extra man goal off an assist from Hunter DeLuca (Medford/Patchogue Medford) to give Oneonta a 5-2 lead at halftime.

Washington College (2-1) got one back in the third quarter on a spinning goal from Powers with an assist Tanner Barbieri with 5:24 to go. That was the only goal of the period.

Allen pulled the Shoremen to within a goal when he scored his third of the night off a Brady O'Neill assist with 8:19 remaining in the fourth. The Red Dragons got that goal back with 5:49 left as Schuman scored off a Solomito feed. Pat McManus cut that lead back to one with a goal off an assist from Allen with 3:53 left.

It looked like the Shoremen's chances of tying the game had faded after a turnover with 33 seconds to go, but the Red Dragons turned the ball back over with 19 seconds left where Docktor scooped up the ball and scored all the way from midfield with 15.7 seconds left as Oneonta goalie Ryan Adler (Smithtown/Smithtown West) was out of the net.

Oneonta certainly had a few opportunities to end the game in overtime.  A point-blank shot by Schuman was saved by Ben Flood with 3:04 left in overtime. Later in the overtime, an Oneonta shot by Nathan Doody (Tully/Tully) went off the crossbar and one by Coyle rang off the post - both on the same possession - before Washington cleared the ball and called timeout with 39.7 seconds left.

The winning goal came when Powers spun off his defender, came inside and shot from the right side to beat Adler nearside post for the game-winner.
