SUNY Oneonta baseball is four games into their spring break trip in Puerto Rico with a 1-3 record. They opened on Sunday against Penn State Abington with a split, dropping the first game 9-8 and bouncing back to win the second game 10-3. They would drop the next two games on Monday both by a score of 3-2 against SUNY Canton and Messiah College.

In the season opener against Penn State Abington, the Red Dragons would come out and score five runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take the lead 5-0. The Nittany Lions would answer with a rally of their own in the top of the second inning by scoring seven runs off of four hits to take a 7-5 lead.Â

With the Red Dragons trailing 7-6 in the fifth inning, junior
Sage Cheren (Bronx, NY/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) would reach on an error by the shortstop before classmate
Michael Grudzinski (Islip/Islip) would double him over to third. A walk to senior
Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem) would load the bases for classmate
Dylan Stamile (Long Beach, NY/Bowie (Austin, TX)). Stamile would drive in Cheren with a sacrifice fly to right field to tie the game at seven. The Nittany Lions would score two runs in the sixth inning and Oneonta would add a single run in the ninth for a final of 9-8.

In the second game, starting pitcher
Thomas Bond (Somers/North Salem) picked up his initial win of the season pitching six strong innings and striking out seven while only allowing one earned run. Junior Casey Kies led the offense going 3-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Red Dragons.

Against SUNY Canton, the Red Dragons led 1-0 entering the bottom of the fifth where the Kangaroos' Wilson Matos hit a bases clearing triple to give them the advantage. Oneonta scored a single run in the seventh to close within one run but could not get the equalizer in a 3-2 loss.

Freshman pitcher
Takoda Sitar (Somers/Somers High School) would go seven innings allowing three runs and striking out five batters in his first collegiate appearance.

Stamile went 3 for 4 in the game with a run batted in and a walk. Â

Against Messiah, Oneonta was leading 2-1 in the seventh inning before a two out, two run triple gave the Falcons a 3-2 lead that they would hold onto.

Oneonta is scheduled to play six more games over the next four days in Puerto Rico.
