Men's basketball drops conference opener at Brockport

Dwayne Freeman scores career high 22 points in loss

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team opened its SUNYAC schedule tonight at Brockport falling 93-83.  The loss for the Red Dragons was its fourth straight while the Golden Eagles remained undefeated on the season.

The bright spots for Oneonta (1-4, 0-1 SUNYAC) were junior guard Dwayne Freeman (Schenectady/Notre-Dame Bishop Gibbons), who scored a career high 22 points and senior Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson), who added 21 points.  Oneonta also outrebounded Brockport (5-0, 1-0 SUNYAC) 44-36 and shot just under 48 percent from the floor.

The eventual margin of victory for the Golden Eagles came from the first half, when they took a 50-40 lead into the break.  The two teams battled each other to a 43-43 second half.  The two teams played relatively even in the paint, but Brockport reserves outscored Oneonta's 36-19 in the game.

The Green and Gold were strong defensively in the opening twenty minutes of play, forcing 16 Red Dragon turnovers. It was a close battle, tied 16-16 at 11:18, but Brockport would open the game up with a 16-4 run, giving them a 32-20 lead at 8:10.

Little changed going into the second half as Brockport went on a 9-4 run that gave them a 59-44 lead at 17:19. The Red Dragons would battle back to pull within 10, but the Green and Gold squad erupted, posting a 14-4 run to take its largest lead of the night, 91-71 at 04:19. Oneonta battled in the remaining four minutes, but Brockport held on for the win.

The Golden Eagles had four players scoring in double digits led by Clifton Lyerly who scored a game high 24 points.  Devonn Gavin added 21 points and Hamed Shamseldin had 14 points and Marcus Blythers chipped in 10 points.
