A goal by junior
Amanda Roney (Schoharie /Middleburgh) in the fourth minute of today's game was all the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team would need, as the Red Dragons defeated the visiting Plattsburgh Cardinals 1-0 in SUNYAC action at Red Dragon Field. The victory for Oneonta upped its record to 5-3-4 overall and 3-1-1 in the conference while the Cardinals drop to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in the SUNYAC.
Â
Roney's goal was set up by a pass out of the midfield by classmate
Laura Rolston (New City/Clarkstown South). Rolston sent a ball ahead that Roney outraced a Plattsburgh defender to inside the box. Roney controlled the ball and moved it to her left foot where she was able to send a ball along the ground passed a diving keeper into the lower right corner.
Â
After the goal, the two teams went back-and-forth with each team generating a couple of opportunities that each keeper was able to handle. The Cardinals held a slim 7-6 advantage in shots in the opening half of play.
Â
In the second half, Oneonta turned up the attack and nearly added to its one-goal lead on multiple occasions.
Â
On two separate plays, junior
Rachel Berk (Eastchester/Eastchester) had headers that were taken off the end line by a Plattsburgh defender.
Â
In the 69
th minute, sophomores
Jess Downin (Franklin/Franklin Central) and Kelsie Moizadeh had consecutive chances that were stopped by Cardinals keeper Nichole Gibson as she was sprawling on the ground as she tried to secure the loose ball. Less than 30 seconds later, Moizadeh had another scoring chance after making a spin move on a defender that hit the left post. Gibson finished the game with 15 saves including 12 in the second half.
Â
The Oneonta defense anchored by goalkeeper
Emilie Mull (Marcy/Whitesboro) kept the visiting Plattsburgh Cardinals off the scoreboard. Mull made six saves in today's match including a couple of diving stops while the defensive unit of senior
Julia Cranz (Huntington/Walt Whitman) and juniors
Paige McDermott (Floral Park/Kellenberg Memorial),
Keley Abbriano (Hicksville/Hicksville) and
Emily Opalinski (East Amherst /Williamsville East ) held the Cardinals to only four shots in the second half.

Oneonta will complete its SUNYAC home weekend with a match versus Potsdam tomorrow beginning at 1pm.
