Lycoming junior Kyle Thomas was in the right place at the right time to knock home the game-winning goal in the 109
th minute to lead visiting Lycoming to a 3-2 win today against SUNY Oneonta. The loss was the second straight for Oneonta (13-5-1), who ended its regular season and now will turn their attention to the SUNYAC tournament, which begins next Wednesday at home.
Â
"It's just not going for us right now," said Coach
Iain Byrne. "We created enough chances. We are going to have to work on our finishing if we are going to make a run in the conference tournament."
Â
The goal for Lycoming (8-6-4) came on a corner kick. Sophomore Jake Webb took the corner for the Warriors and he sent the ball across the goal to the left post. The ball skimmed off another player before Thomas one-timed it to the back of the goal to end the match.
Â
After a scoreless first 45 minutes of play, the two teams went back-and-forth until the final horn of regulation with the score tied at 2-2.
Â
The Warriors got on the scoreboard first in the third minute of the second half. Freshman Steven Riad made a hustle play to keep the ball in taking it off the end line. He sent a pass out in front where Abdullahi Abdi took the bouncing ball and sent it towards the goal. Freshman Daniel Anwanwan was able to get his foot on the ball and gave it an extra push past Oneonta keeper
Mike Gaffary (Bay Shore/St. John the Baptist).
Â
Ten minutes later, freshman
Witman Hernandez (Huntington/Walt Whitman) got the equalizer for Oneonta with his eighth goal of the season.
Â
Lycoming had cleared out a corner kick to near midfield where junior
Austin Hughes (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) sent the ball back into the box. Hernandez took one touch to get it ahead before putting a shot on goal that deflected off a falling keeper into the goal.
Â
Lycoming went ahead in the 72 minute on a nice goal that started in their third of the field with a clearing pass out of the back by Alfonce Mutuku. Sainclair Tueno made a nice play on the sideline to keep the ball in with a header pass to a racing Duc Momo who continued to goal after receiving the ball. He took a shot from the right side of the box that ended up just inside the left post.
Â
Oneonta came back once again to tie the score five minutes later on a goal by senior
Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City). The goal came on the rebound off the left post on a direct kick by sophomore
Alejandro Ruiz (Brentwood/Brentwood) from outside the box.
Â
Oneonta held a decided advantage in shots (29-11) and corner kicks (9-4) in the match.
Â
Senior
Mike Gaffary (Bay Shore/St. John the Baptist) made four saves in his first start since Sep. 5. He had to leave the game in the 96
th minute and was relieved by sophomore
Nick Lindovski (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville), who was making his first appearance for Oneonta.
Â
Oneonta's next match will be against the winner of the Fredonia/Plattsburgh game, which is being played Saturday in Fredonia. The semifinal match-up is scheduled for a 1pm kickoff next Wednesday.
