Women's soccer shuts out Fredonia 2-0

Red Dragons earn No. 3 seed for SUNYAC tournament

Freshman Christina Kornfeld (Mount Sinai/Miller Place) and junior Emily Opalinski (East Amherst /Williamsville East ) punched home goals in the second half of today's game at Fredonia, as the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team blanked the hosts 2-0 in the SUNYAC finale for both teams.

The win for Oneonta (9-4-4-/6-2-1 SUNYAC) earned them the No. 3 seed for the upcoming conference tournament, which begins next Saturday, Oct. 29.  The Red Dragons will host Brockport at 1pm on Red Dragon Field.

Oneonta scored in the 68th minute on a play which started with a corner kick. The ball was booted around the box before Paige McDermott (Floral Park/Kellenberg Memorial) slid a pass through a maze of players. Kornfeld was positioned in front of the net for her scoring shot, her first collegiate goal.

Opalinski's goal early in the 87th minute was on a corner kick which found its mark into the top of the net.

Oneonta outshot Fredonia 27-6 including 17-3 in the second half.

Sophomore Emilie Mull (Marcy/Whitesboro) made four saves in goal to pick up her fifth shutout of the season.  Early in the first half she stopped a breakaway to keep the match scoreless.

The Red Dragons return home Wednesday to face city rival Hartwick on Red Dragon Field beginning at 3pm.
