Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer falls to city rival Hartwick

Junior Allie Ricci was in the right place at the right time to collect an errand pass by the Oneonta defense before knocking home a shot past Emilie Mull (Marcy/Whitesboro) in the 80th minute, as the visiting Hartwick Hawks defeated the Red Dragons 2-1 this afternoon.  The win for Hartwick raised its overall record to 9-4-3 while the loss dropped Oneonta to 9-5-4 overall.

On Ricci's goal, the ball came into the box on a free kick from midfield.  An Oneonta defender then looked to clear the ball across to box where Ricci was waiting.  Ricci didn't hesitate before sending the ball into the back of the goal for her fifth of the season.

The eventual game-winner came exactly 10 minutes after Oneonta had tied the score at 1-1 on a goal by freshman Christina Kornfeld (Mount Sinai/Miller Place).  Kornfeld's goal was set up by a hustle play from sophomore Kelsie Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), who collected a loose ball and sent a pass into the box in front of the goal.  Kornfeld was all alone and finished the play off with a header.

Oneonta nearly tied the score in the 83rd minute when a shot by senior Taylor Messina (Smithtown/Smithtown East) was taken off the end line by a Hartwick defender.  The opportunity came on a free kick, which classmate Julia Cranz (Huntington/Walt Whitman) sent into the box.  The ball bounced around where Messina got her foot on it and sent a shot towards the goal.

Hartwick got on the scoreboard in the 24th minute when they converted on one of its three first half shots.  Junior Sierra Bentley sent a long crossing pass in from the right flank to the front of the goal.  Sophomore Rachel Weir found herself unmarked, settled the pass, and put a shot into the left corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.

Oneonta finished the match with a 17-7 advantage in shots and the two squads each earned a pair of corner kicks.

Mull finished with three saves and Megan McGillycuddy registered eight saves for the Hawks.

Oneonta next match is this coming Saturday when they host Brockport in the quarterfinals of the SUNYAC tournament.  Game time is scheduled for 1pm.
