After spending three weeks on the road, the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team returned home today and picked up a 2-1 victory against visiting Morrisville. The win was the 12
th of the season for No. 18 Oneonta (12-3-1) while the loss for the Mustangs dropped them to 11-3 overall.
Â
All of the scoring in the match came during a 10-minute stretch in the second half after the two squads battled to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes of action.
Â
Junior
Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) got the scoring started with his fourth goal of the season in the 52
nd minute. The goal was set up by classmate
Luke Osovski (Endicott/Maine Endwell) who got a return pass after a throw-in before sending a crossing pass across the box from the left flank. A Morrisville defender tried to get a head on the ball to clear it, but it skimmed off his head and ended up with Santangelo. Santangelo settled the ball before blasting a shot that hit the inside of the cross bar and deflected down over the goal line.
Â
Morrisville came back four minutes later to tie the score on a similar goal. Jamieson McKoy was able to collect a ball at the top of the box. He then took one dribble to get the ball on his left foot before firing a shot that sailed to the cross bar before deflecting down across the line.
Â
The score wouldn't be tied for long, as the Red Dragons came back in the 62
nd minute with the go-ahead goal. Sophomore
Alejandro Ruiz (Brentwood/Brentwood) received a cross into the box from freshman
Witman Hernandez (Huntington/Walt Whitman), took one touch, and then rifled a shot into the left side of the goal. For Ruiz, it was his fourth goal of the season while Hernandez recorded his team-leading fifth assist of the season.
Â
Oneonta dominated 17-3 in shots including a couple in the second half that could have given them a couple more goals, but they just sailed high.
Â
Oneonta freshman
Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) picked up his 12
th win of the season making one save in the match. Â His counterpart from Morrisville, also a freshman, Mick Keilan recorded six saves.
Â
"Morrisville played well, but we got the winner in an exciting second half," said Coach
Iain Byrne. "We now face our biggest game of the season Friday against Buffalo State in a match to determine the second seed for the conference tournament."
Â
That game Friday will be at home, as Oneonta closes out the SUNYAC regular season this weekend. Fredonia comes to town on Saturday to complete the weekend.
Â
The Red Dragons have already clinched a spot in the conference tournament and are currently in second place. Oneonta needs to win both games this weekend and hope that Cortland loses its game against Oswego to win the regular season crown and claim the top spot for the tournament, which begins with quarterfinal matches on Saturday, Oct. 29.
