Women’s tennis takes down Baruch College 7-2

Oneonta, NY – The Red Dragon women's tennis squad got to a season record of 8-3 this time defeating the City University of NY Conference member the Baruch College Bearcats 7-2.  The Bearcats took the four-hour ride from New York City and found a very ready Red Dragon team looking for a win after losing to Hamilton College earlier in the week.

Doubles play saw the number two flighted team of senior Kayla Houle (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) and Kaitlin Ferrara secure an impressive 8-3 win as the pair continue to complement one another with good serving from Houle and dominant net play from Ferrara.  The number three team of sophomore Faith Haedrich (Islip/Islip) and junior Samantha Felice (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) were overwhelming in their 8-1 victory also with forceful net play from both helping to secure the triumph.

A 2-1 advantage following doubles play catapulted the singles lineup into earning the conquest of the Bearcats.  Number one player senior Alana Green (Pittsford/Pittsford) played a very mentally tough match.  Green won the first set 6-4 after going down 0-2, dropped the second set 1-6 and found herself in a super tiebreaker to determine the number one win.  Green went down 0-5 in the super breaker and then was down 4-8 and saved a match point down 8-9.  She won the next three points and earned a very satisfying hard earned triumph.  Sophomore Michelle Halpern (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) was dominant at number three singles taking a 6-1, 6-0 win into the locker room.  Haedrich playing steady tennis at the number four spot never let her opponent into the match and was overbearing securing the 6-0, 6-1 victory.  Fifth singles player Houle secured an impressive win 6-0, 6-2 and at the sixth position Felice double bageled her Bearcat foe 6-0, 6-0.  Of note was freshman Danielle Swiercyzna playing exhibition doubles and singles today is undefeated on the season in her supporting role winning again today.

The Red Dragon women go back down to Long Island on Monday, October 3rd and take on St. Joseph's College from the Skyline Conference where a big supportive Oneonta crowd is expected.  The match begins at 5 PM on the campus of St. Joseph College in Patchogue, NY.  They return home and the very next day take on their hometown rivals Hartwick College on Tuesday, October 4th beginning at 3:30 PM on the campus of SUNY Oneonta at the Heissan Courts.
