The No. 3 SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team scored in the third minute and never looked back, as they overpowered St. John Fisher 5-0 in its opening game of the 2015 Oneonta Mayor's Cup tournament. The Red Dragons outshot the Cardinals, 22-3, enroute to the lopsided victory that gives them a 2-0 start to the season. The win for Oneonta was also the second consecutive via a shutout.
Â
Senior
Sean Vinberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) got the Red Dragons rolling with his first goal of the season. He took a drop pass at the top of the box from classmate
Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) before rifling a shot into the lower right corner of the goal.
Â
Less than two minutes later, senior
Brian Bartichek (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) put Oneonta up 2-0 with his first of a pair of tallies on the day. Junior
Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City) created the opportunity when he charged a ball that he was able to chest forward to Bartichek. Bartichek then sent a low shot into the left corner of the goal.
Â
In the 12
th minute it was Purtell that would give the Red Dragons a commanding 3-0 lead. Purtell was the beneficiary of a crossing pass from the right flank by sophomore
Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) that went across the box untouched. Â Purtell collected the pass and put a shot on frame that found the open goal.
Â
Bartichek would add his second goal in the 34
th minute when he dribbled by a couple of defenders before getting a shot by the Cardinals' keeper.
Â
Oneonta went into halftime with a 4-0 lead, which included a 10-1 shot advantage.
Â
Coach
Iain Byrne changed his lineup in the second half and the Red Dragons continued its attack. Junior
Dillon Johnson (Northport/Northport) scored his first goal in an Oneonta uniform as he was in the right place at the right time on a crossing pass into the box by freshman
Ian Cepiel (Stillwater/Stillwater Central). Johnson deposited the ball into a wide open goal, as the keeper was out of position.
Â
The Red Dragons will face Ithaca College tomorrow at 4pm down at Wright National Soccer Campus, as the tournament concludes. Ithaca lost its match today, 4-1 to Medaille. Medaille will take on St. John Fisher at 1pm tomorrow.
