The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team played the first game on the newly turfed Red Dragon Field and christened it in style with a 4-0 victory against Allegheny this afternoon. The Red Dragons looked fast and technical, as they rolled their way to the lopsided win to raise its record to 4-1-1 overall.
Oneonta was in attack mode from the opening whistle creating scoring chances early. The play continued in the Gator's half of the field throughout the first half, as the Red Dragons kept the pressure on.
The Red Dragons finally put a goal on the scoreboard on a nice individual play by sophomore
Kayla Belush (Earlville/Sherburne-Earlville). Belush took a one-touch pass from senior
Kayla Distin (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) just outside the box. Belush then dribbled through and around a pair of defenders before getting a low shot off that beat a diving keeper to her left. The goal was Belush's third of the season.
After taking its one-goal lead into the second half, Oneonta left no doubt about whom the victor would be today with a pair of goals in the opening two minutes of the second half. The first goal came off a corner kick when senior
Jessica Lyden (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) got her head on a service from sophomore
Emily Opalinski (East Amherst /Williamsville East ). The ball went right by the keeper for her first goal of the season.
Thirty-five seconds later, Franklin High graduate,
Jess Downin (Franklin/Franklin Central), made a tremendous run from the left flank into the box and around the defense before sending a ball to the back of the goal underneath the Gator keeper.
The final goal for Oneonta came in the 54
th minute on a direct kick by senior
Avery Serfis (West Hurley/Onteora), who was able to get a ball through the wall to the lower left corner of the goal.
The Red Dragons played three keepers today with the win going to starter
Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central), who made three saves in the first half.
The Red Dragons will get to play two more home games before hitting the road in early October. Next Friday and Saturday, Oneonta opens up its SUNYAC schedule with Oswego and rival Cortland. Friday's game versus Oswego starts at 3pm while Saturday's game with Cortland begins at 1pm.
