Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer sinks Lakers with strong second half performance

Sophomore Emily Opalinski scores twice to lead Red Dragons

Sophomore Emily Opalinski (East Amherst /Williamsville East ) scored both goals today in leading the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against visiting Oswego to open its SUNYAC schedule.  Opalinski's game-winner came in the 89th minute on a corner kick where she served a ball that curved in towards the goal before going off the goalies hand and into the goal.  The service came from the corner flag to the right of the Oswego goal.

Oneonta (5-1-1/1-0-0 SUNYAC) trailed Oswego (4-3-0/0-1-0) at halftime, 1-0, when sophomore Sarah Grupp converted a penalty kick that was awarded when she was knocked down inside the box.  The shot was one of the five that the Lakers had in the opening 45 minutes.

The second half was a different story, as the Red Dragons took control from the opening whistle.  Oneonta finished the match with a 14-6 shot advantage that included a 13-1 dominance in the second half.

Opalinski's first goal came in the 55th minute on a direct kick from the deep left flank, nearly 30 yards out.  The goal was a carbon copy of the game-winner where she was able to bend the ball back towards the goal and high enough where the Oswego keeper had to reach up for it.  An off-balanced keeper could only try to knock it away as the ball deflected off her hand and into the goal.

In the minutes leading up to the game-winner, senior Caitlyn LaPier (Chazy/Chazy) had a couple of opportunities that would have given the Red Dragons the lead.  Her first came in the 81st minute where her chip just went over the cross bar.  Her second opportunity was 23 seconds prior to the Opalinski's goal.  Melissa Siegfried made a diving save and the ball ended up over the end line, which gave Oneonta the corner kick that Opalinski scored on.

Senior Rori Stark (Brewster/Brewster), who played the second half of the game for Oneonta, earned the win in relief of starter Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central).  Stark stopped the only shot she saw in the second half to move to 2-0 on the season.

Oneonta will be in action again tomorrow afternoon beginning at 1pm, as they host rival SUNY Cortland on Red Dragon Field.
