Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer battles Vassar to 1-1 draw

The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team traveled to Vassar on Saturday for a nonconference tilt with the Brewers.  Despite outshooting the hosts, 19-8, the Red Dragons had to settle for a 1-1 draw.  With the draw, Oneonta is now 3-1-1 overall while Vassar moves to 2-1-2.

The game was not devoid of scoring chances throughout regulation and overtime, but neither team could net the elusive game-winning goal.

Vassar took an early 1-0 lead when they converted an opportunity from action that ensued after a corner kick.  Senior Nick Hess was able to get a shot off in the midst of a couple of Oneonta defenders.

The Red Dragons would tally the equalizer later on in the first half, after the official dinged Vassar for a handball inside the 18-yard box.  Senior Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) stepped up to take the penalty kick for Oneonta, and powered his shot into the right corner to tie the game at one. The Red Dragons would hold an 8-4 advantage in attempts on goal in the half, but the teams stayed knotted at one heading into the second period.

As the game was entering the final 15 minutes, both squads had near misses including a shot that went off the cross bar by Vassar's Tyler Gilmore in the 88th minute.  The two teams headed to overtime still tied at one goal apiece.

The Red Dragons had the best opportunities to end the match during the overtimes, but couldn't push a shot past the Brewers' keeper.  In the 95th minute, senior Brian Bartichek (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) blasted a shot from inside the 18 that ended up getting cleared off the goal line by a Vassar defender.  With seconds remaining in the second overtime, sophomore Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) had a header off a corner kick that was heading for the back of the goal, but was punched away by the Vassar keep.

Oneonta keeper Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin) made two stops in goal for the Red Dragons while Vassar's Adam Warner totaled seven saves.

Oneonta will continue on the road this Wednesday when they travel to Troy, NY to face Rensselaer beginning at 7pm.
