Sophomore
Nathan Doody (Tully/Tully) scored with 10 seconds to go in today's contest, as the SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team registered a thrilling 11-10 win at home against Plattsburgh, who was in first place in the SUNYAC. Doody, who had an opportunity with 24 seconds to go, but shot high, made his second one count to lift the Red Dragons to the victory.
Â
"Plattsburgh has established itself as on of the top teams in the SUNYAC," said head coach
Dan Mahar after the game. "This is an important win for our program and our seniors, who had never beaten Plattsburgh. Our players have been warriors all year in pressure situations and today they proved to be the better team."
Â
Prior to the final possession of the game for Oneonta (5-5, 2-1 SUNYAC), the Red Dragons withstood a barrage of shots from Plattsburgh (9-4, 2-1 SUNYAC) over a stretch of more than 1:30. The final shot came from Brendan Damn in close, but was stymied by
Ryan Adler (Smithtown/Smithtown West). Adler came up big again today; making 12 saves including a handful from point-blank range.
Â
The Red Dragons entered the fourth quarter with a 9-7 advantage. Damn assisted on a man-up goal by Ryan Callahan at the 12:05 mark to cut the Cardinals' deficit to a single goal.
Â
Sophomore
Charles Montgomery (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) scored an unassisted goal to put Oneonta back up by a pair with 9:44 remaining.
Â
Plattsburgh then scored back-to-back goals including their third man-up goal of the game at the 5:32 mark by Austin Belz to knot the game at 10 apiece.
Â
Oneonta took a 2-0 and held it through the opening quarter. Freshman
Alec Solomito (Holtsville/Sachem East) opened the scoring for the Red Dragons at 12:45 and junior
Mike Metzger (Colonie/Colonie), who scored a man-up goal at 8:41, assisted by Doody, followed him.
Â
The two teams combined for nine goals in the second stanza including five by the Cardinals. Plattsburgh came back to tie the score at five, but an unassisted goal by junior
Connor Coyle (Centerport/Harborfields) with 25 seconds to go gave Oneonta a 6-5 lead heading into halftime.
Â
In the third period, Oneonta registered three goals including the first of the season for junior
Brandon Hickey (Pearl River/The Harvey School) to build its lead to two goals entering the final quarter.
Â
Oneonta will be in action again next Tuesday when they travel to SUNY Geneseo for a conference tilt beginning at 4pm.
