CORTLAND, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta softball team opened the SUNYAC Tournament Thursday afternoon with a 3-2 win over Buffalo State on the campus of Cortland. Senior
Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) and junior
Traci Lichtenstein (Plainview/JFK) each went yard to power the win.
The bats took little time to warm up for the Red Dragons. With one out in the bottom of the first, Marzillo took a shot deep over the left field fence on the very first pitch she saw.
The Bengals got the run back in the top of the second on an RBI single by Stephanie Novo.
The score remained knotted at one until the bottom of the third. Lichtenstein came to the dish with two down, before busting out her third home run trot of the season.
The Red and White scored again in the next inning. Sophomore
Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) led off with a single up the middle, moving to second on an illegal pitch then third on a wild pitch. Classmate Jenn Brocco would plate her with a sac fly to right.
Sophomore
Sabrina DeAngelis (East Meadow/Kellenberg Memorial) retired 10 batters in a row ending the second through the fifth inning. DeAngelis a pair in the span, while forcing a half dozen groundouts, a foul out and a fly out on an incedible diving catch by rookie center fielder
Ashley Lefebvre (Waterford/Waterford-Halfmoon). The Reigning SUNYAC Pitcher of the Year picked up the win tossing all seven innings giving up a pair of runs on three hits with a trio of strikeouts.
Oneonta will take on second seeded Geneseo at 11 am tomorrow. The day's second game will be determined by the results of the rest of today's action.
