The SUNY Oneonta baseball team got a pair of strong outings today on the mound by freshmen hurlers
RJ Lyman (Mohegan Lake/Walter Panas) and
Nicholas Ponesse (Newburgh/Valley Central), but couldn't back them up with any run support, as they dropped a pair of one-run games versus Ithaca College. Oneonta (3-11) managed only 11 hits combined on the day, as the Ithaca (5-7) pitchers held the Red Dragon bats in check.
Â
Lyman went the distance in game one allowing six hits and two runs in a 2-1 loss. The Bombers scored both of their runs in the home half of the second inning on an infield single and a sacrifice fly.
Â
Oneonta's lone run came in the fifth inning on a throwing error by the pitcher on a sacrifice bunt by junior
LJ Gizzarelli (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) that scored classmate
Joe Franke (Livingston Manor/Liberty Central). Franke had led off the inning with a double to right field.
Â
Junior
Casey Kerdesky (Cornwall/Cornwall) and sophomore
Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) each had a pair of hits for Oneonta.
Â
In the second game, Ponesse threw four innings and surrendered only three hits and one run in a tough 1-0 defeat. Ponesse struck out a pair while walking two batters.
Â
Senior
Kyle Jordan (Levittown/Division) and junior
Erik Johansen (Rosendale/Rondout) each pitched an inning of scoreless relief for Oneonta.
Â
The Bombers scored its run in the second inning on a two-out single that brought a runner in from second base.
Â
Senior
Mike Cruz (Levittown/Division Avenue) went 2-for-2 in the loss for Oneonta.
Â
Oneonta is scheduled to face Plattsburgh on Saturday at Dutchess Stadium in Wappinger Falls. First pitch is scheduled for 8:30pm.
