The visiting No. 12 SUNY Cortland men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the opening quarter today and never looked back, as they soundly defeated host SUNY Oneonta 18-4.  The rival Red Dragons outshot Oneonta (5-7, 2-3 SUNYAC) 52-27 while winning 22-of-24 face offs in remaining undefeated in SUNYAC play at 4-0.
 
Cortland (10-4) took a 1-0 lead in the opening minute of the game when Mike Cantelli scored off an assist from Matt Rakoczy at 14:12.  Cantelli scored less than six minutes later unassisted to give Cortland a 2-0 advantage.
 
After falling behind 4-0, Oneonta finally got on the scoreboard with back-to-back goals by junior 
Connor Coyle (Centerport/Harborfields) 44 seconds apart.
 
Cortland outscored Oneonta, 5-1, in the second quarter to take a commanding 10-3 lead into the break.  Oneonta's lone goal in the quarter came from freshman 
Alec Solomito (Holtsville/Sachem East), who notched his sixth of the season unassisted.
 
Cortland continued to pull away in the second half, posting back-to-back, four-goal, quarters while holding Oneonta to a single goal in the third quarter.
 
Zach Hopps led Cortland with a pair of goals to go with four assists for a six-point afternoon.  Rakoczy finished with three goals and one assist while Cantelli had added an assist to his two goals.
 
Winning goalie Scott Tota made seven saves today in one half of action.  
Ryan Adler (Smithtown/Smithtown West) recorded 17 saves for Oneonta in 49 minutes between the pipes.
 
Oneonta will be at home again this Wednesday when they face city-rival Hartwick beginning at 4pm.
