Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women’s tennis shut out by William Smith

Geneva, NY – The SUNY Oneontawomen's tennis squad faced the always tough William Smith College Herons today and were shutout 9-0.  Windy conditions were another hurdle the women could not overcome in addition to the tennis onslaught delivered by William Smith.

In doubles play, the team of senior Brynn Sussman (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) and junior Michelle Spencer (Homer/Homer) dropped their match at the number one position 8-2, as they were unable to hold serve and were overpowered throughout the match.  The number two doubles team of freshman Samantha Felice (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) and senior Kelly Gochan (Lake Grove/Sachem North) did not fare much better and dropped its match by the identical score.  However, the third doubles team of senior Marina Salzano (Katonah/John Jay) and junior Samantha Butcher (Sidney/Sidney Central) kept their match very tight, at one point going up 5-4, but dropped four of the next five games and bowed out 8-6.

Holding an imposing lead the Herons would not allow the Red Dragons to win a point in singles play.  Sussman a winner in five of her last six matches could not find her normal winning form and lost in straight sets 3-6, 1-6 from an opponent who was just more consistent on this day.   Butcher, although dropping her match at number five 2-6, 2-6 continues to impress teammates and opponents by showing steady improvement every contest since moving into a starting spot.  Senior Eliza Shilleto, playing only her second match in over a year, was also impressive at the number six spot showing heart and determination by coming back from 1-5 down in the second set, saving match points along the way, but just could not fend off her opponent and had to settle for a 2-6, 5-7 setback.

The women's tennis squad takes a week off and then heads to SUNY New Paltz for a doubles invitational on Saturday, April 25th.  They will take the court at 10 AM to begin their last away match of the 2014/15 campaign.
