Baseball outlasts New Paltz in 13 innings

Joe Franke collects three hits and two RBIs

The SUNY Oneonta baseball team took advantage of a pair of miscues last night, which led to a pair of runs, as the Red Dragons took a 4-3 win at New Paltz last night in 13 innings.  Oneonta (6-15, 3-7 SUNYAC) got strong outings from both starter James McCarty (Stony Brook/Chaminade) and reliever Erik Johansen (Rosendale/Rondout) in the game.

In the 13th, sophomore Billy Riedel (East Northport/John Glenn) reached on a throwing error to start the inning.  Freshman Joshua Quesada (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) then ran for Riedel and was sacrificed to second by senior Mike Cruz (Levittown/Division Avenue).  Quesada then moved to third on a wild pitch and came in to score on a double to right center by junior Joe Franke (Livingston Manor/Liberty Central).  Franke stole third and New Paltz intentionally walked classmate LJ Gizzarelli (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) to put runners at the corners.  Franke then scored on a failed pickoff at first base that sailed by the first baseman.

New Paltz (4-17, 1-9 SUNYAC) tried to rally in the bottom of the inning, but fell one run short.  Johansen recorded the final two outs in the inning via strike out.  Johansen finished the game with five punch-outs in four innings of relief to earn his first win of the season.

The game was tied at one run apiece entering the ninth inning.  With two outs, junior Casey Kerdesky (Cornwall/Cornwall) hit a single to right field that drove in freshman Samuel Beaulac, who had reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second.  The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the inning to force extra innings.

McCarty threw the first nine innings tonight and allowed one earned run while striking out four batters.

Franke was the hitting star of the game with three hits and a pair of runs batted in.

Oneonta will travel to SUNY Cortland tomorrow to begin its three-game series against the current No. 1 ranked team in Division III.  Friday's single game is slated for a 3pm start.
