The SUNY Oneonta baseball team traveled north today to finish its series with Plattsburgh and came away with a split, winning the opener, 11-2, and dropping the second game 14-1. The Red Dragons recorded a season high 11 runs while pounding Plattsburgh pitching for a season high 15 hits in the opener.

Oneonta (5-15, 2-8 SUNYAC) wasted no time in jumping on Plattsburgh starter Brandon Buksa in game 1, as they rang up seven runs in the top of the first inning. The Red Dragons loaded the bases with its first three batters before a single to left field by sophomore
Billy Riedel (East Northport/John Glenn) drove in freshman Samuel Beaulac with the first run. Two batters later, junior
Joe Franke (Livingston Manor/Liberty Central) batted with the bases still loaded and no outs. Franke tripled to right field to clear the bases and give Oneonta a 5-0 lead. Franke scored on an RBI single to center field by junior
LJ Gizzarelli (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy). The final run of the inning came on a single by Beaulac that delivered sophomore
Wayne Baker (Port Washington/Paul D. Schreiber) from second base.

The Red Dragons scored its final four runs in the fifth inning on a couple of two RBI hits by Beaulac and Riedel. Beaulac had a one-out single to drive in
Dillon Merola (Cornwall/Cornwall) and Gizzarelli. Riedel drilled a two-out double that drove in
Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) and
Casey Kerdesky (Cornwall/Cornwall).

Freshman
Thomas Bond (Somers/North Salem) had another solid outing on the hill for Oneonta. He pitched six complete innings and allowed six hits and two earned runs.

Mike Cruz (Levittown/Division Avenue) each had three hits to lead Oneonta, which had a season high 15 hits in the game. Beaulac and Riedel each collected a pair of hits while driving in three runs. Merola finished with two hits and Franke finished with three runs batted in.

After a single run in the bottom of the first for Plattsburgh, and RBI single by Franke in the top of the second tied the score. The Cardinals scored four runs in the fifth before breaking the game wide open with four more runs in the seventh inning to take a 9-1 lead. Plattsburgh added its final five runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin of victory.

Beaulac and Cruz each had a pair of hits in the loss. One of Cruz's hits was a triple, which he came in to score the lone run for Oneonta.

Oneonta will be on the road again tomorrow when they play New Paltz at Cantine Park in Saugerties beginning at 7pm.
