The SUNY Oneonta softball team finished a spotless weekend on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon on the hill. The Red and White used an 8-2 game one win and a 10-2, five-inning game two win over conference foe Plattsbuergh to round out the weekend.
Game 1: After falling behind 1-0 on a first inning home run by Plattsburgh's Brittany Marshall, the Red Dragons came back with an immediate response. Senior
Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) singled to short, advancing to third on a double to right field by junior
Traci Lichtenstein (Plainview/JFK). Senior
Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland) plated both runners when she smacked a 1-0 pitch to right center for a two-bagger.
After three and a half scoreless frames, the Red and White bats went back to work in the bottom of the fourth. Junior
Jamie Whittam (Saugerties/Saugerties) singled to short on a 1-0, one out putch. Rookie
Ashley Lefebvre (Waterford/Waterford-Halfmoon) moved Whittam to second with a bunt single before Marzillo's single to right loaded the bases for Lichtenstein. The power hitting designated player made Cardinals pay in grand fashion on the first pitch of the at-bat with a grand slam to right center, chasing pitcher Kirsten Fisher.
Oneonta threatened again in the fifth with sophomore
Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) drawing a leadoff walk, moving to second on a sac bunt and stealing third, but could not be brought home.
After sophomore pitcher
Sabrina DeAngelis (East Meadow/Kellenberg Memorial) retired the side in order in the sixth, the Red and White tacked on two more runs in their final plate appearance. Lefebvre led off by reaching on an error by the second baseman then swiped second. Lichtenstein notched her fifth RBI of the contest on a one out single to left. Two batters later, sophomore shortstop
Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) plated Lichtenstein on a two out single up the middle.
The Cardinals put a run up in the top of the seventh, but DeAngelis shut down the comeback attempt by striking out the game's final two batters.
DeAngelis tossed seven innings, surrendering a pair of runs on six hits fanning five and walking one.
Game 2: The second game saw the hosts do damage in all five innings. Sophomore Jenn Brocco put together a spectacular game at the dish going 3-3 finishing a triple shy of the cycle.
With two out and two runners in scoring position, Cuevas drove a single up the middle to plate Marzillo.
Brocco's first plate appearance came leading off the bottom of the second. The third baseman drove a 1-0 pitch to deep left field for a double. Lefebvre scored Brocco from third with a two-out double down the left field line.
Senior pitcher
Rachel Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack Central) retired the side in order in the top of the third before Brocco struck again in the bottom of the frame. Broco came to the plate with two out and runners on the corners; with a 1-1 count she belted her first career round tripper in a three-run fashion.
Plattsburgh got a run back in the next inning on a one-put RBI single to left, but Oneonta had an immediate response. Lefebvre served as the first base runner of the frame for the Red and White when she took a 2-2 pitch to right center for a single, subsequently stealing second. Following a walk by Lichtenstein, Rivera reached on an error by the pitcher that allowed the lead runner to score.
After keeping the visitors silent in the top of the fifth, Oneonta was ready to finish off the impressive weekend. O'Gorman started the bottom of the fifth with a double to center before scoring on Brocco's single to right on the next at-bat. Brocco swiped second before junior
Meaghan Foster (Walden/Valley Central) walked. Second baseman
Nicole Brieva (Kings Park/Kings Park) cleared the bases with a double, advancing to third on the throw. The senior proved to be the winning run when Lefebvre took an 0-1 pitch to center for a single.
Hitt was not charged with a run in five innings of work. She struck out four and walked a pair.
Overall: Brocco went 3-5 on the afternoon, driving in four; she along with Lefebvre, Lichtenstein and Marzillo scored three runs on the day.
Lefebvre, O'Gorman and Marzillo are each riding a six-game hit streak; Marzillo has reached base in 13 consecutive contests.
