Sage:The SUNY Oneonta softball team kicked off its second day of spring break action in Minneola, Fla. with a 1-0 eight inning win over Sage Monday afternoon. Sophomore pitch
Sabrina DeAngelis (East Meadow/Kellenberg Memorial) tossed a one hit gem for the Red and White fanning seven and walking three in eight innings of work.
DeAngelis' settled in early as she struck out four straight batters to end the first and complete the second inning. Dialed in and throwing well, she took a no hitter into the sixth inning before having it broke up on a two out single up the middle.
Oneonta threatened in the top half of the fourth inning after senior catcher
Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland) singled up the middle to lead off the inning. Pinch runner
Shelby Cleaveland (Oneonta/Oneonta) moved to third on a pair of groundouts but could not be brought home. Â With runners reaching third base in both the sixth and seventh inning, The Red Dragons and unable to score, the game went to the eighth in a scoreless tie. Per tiebreak rules, sophomore
Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was placed on second base to start the inning. The outfielder showed smart base running to swipe third base right off the bat before scoring when a routine throw back from the pitcher to catcher went flying behind second place. The run proved to be the game winner. The Red and White defense sat down the Gators in order to end the game.
Bethany:Junior
Traci Lichtenstein (Plainview/JFK) picked the offense up immediately to start the second game of the day. The designated player took a two out, 2-0 pitch to right field for a base knock, only to steal second base immediately after. Shortstop
Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) moved Lichtenstein to third with a down the right side before O'Gorman put an RBI single to the same place. Rivera brought home Cuevas with a single of her own to center.
It was a defensive battle from there until the bottom of the fifth inning where the Red Dragons tacked on four more runs. With two down and nobody on, Lichtenstein belted a double to deep right field. The next batter, Cuevas, singled to short before O'Gorman singled to center. Rivera came to the dish with the bases loaded and smacked a bases clearing single deep to dead center field. Freshman
Karlene Ziegler (Levittown/Island Trees) scored her first career run as a pinch runner when on an error by the Bison after classmate
Cori McFall (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) recorded her first career hit up the middle.
