WPI:The SUNY Oneonta softball team started its third day in Florida with a roar as they knocked off WPI 8-1. Sophomore outfielder
Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and senior first baseman
Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) each crossed the plate twice to lead the Red Dragons.
After surrendering a run in the top of the first, Oneonta got off to a good start offensively as leadoff hitter, junior
Jamie Whittam (Saugerties/Saugerties), singled on a 1-1 count. The second baseman would advance as far as third but was unable to be brought home.
A five run second inning opened the game up for the Red Dragons. Senior catcher
Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland) started the frame with a triple deep to right center, and scored when O'Gorman singled through the right side in the next at-bat. Whittam drew a walk with two on and two out to load the bases before pinch hitter senior Nicole Paolino reached on an error by the shortstop that scored O'Gorman. Sophomore
Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) singled to left field to score to score Whittam and Marzillo before junior designated hitter junior
Traci Lichtenstein (Plainview/JFK) brought home junior Meghan Foster.
Freshman
Ashley Lefebvre (Waterford/Waterford-Halfmoon) recorded her first base knock in the top of the third on a bunt to the first base side to load the bases. During the next at bat, WPI pitcher Kelsey Saucier threw a wild pitch to advance each runner and score O'Gorman. Marzillo scored on a sac fly to left by sophomore Jenn Brocco. Lefevbre moved into scoring position when Whittam singled through the left side; the rookie would score her first collegiate run on another wild pitch.
With the score sheet reading 8-1, the defenses took over as neither team put a runner past first base the rest of the way. Freshman catcher
Emma Romeo (Sag Harbor/Pierson) made her debut behind the plate when she entered the game in the top of the seventh. Sophomore
Sabrina DeAngelis (East Meadow/Kellenberg Memorial) picked up her third win of the season tossing seven innings surrendering one run on five hits with a pair of punch-out's and four walks.
Monmouth:Rachel Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack Central) got the ball for Oneonta's second game of the day. The senior surrendered three runs (two earned) on eight hits with a strikeout and two walks in seven innings of work.
Two of the Scots three runs came in the top of the first before the Red and White settled in. Oneonta got on the board in the bottom of the third when Lefebvre, who led off the inning with a double to left center, scored on a Foster single to the shortstop.
Lichtenstein led off the Red Dragons' second big inning of the day with a single to second. Lefebvre came up with the bases loaded and one out, after an RBI single the rookie advanced to second on an error by the shortstop. Sophomore
Shelby Cleaveland (Oneonta/Oneonta), in as a pinch runner, and O'Gorman each scored on the play. Brocco brought home LEvebvre and Marzillo with a single to center. Oneonta posted four runs on a trio of hits while taking advantage of a pair of Monmouth errors.
Monmouth responded with a home run in the top of the fifth but strong defense and pitching from Oneonta didn't allow the Scots any closer.
The Red Dragons (5-1) have Wednesday off before taking to the field on Thursday at the National Training Center against Marywood and Moravian.
